Routine September

Name the women you have slept with
who talked to owls –
this is how you count mornings.

Watch the boy collect another wren
in another box –
this is how you do not see a bird leave.

Wait for rain to carry the box
downstream –
this is how you quit loving the moon.

Listen to the boy forget about the bird
and run by the river –
this is how you learn what flies.

Find a woman to keep the small bones
hidden from the boy –
this is how you find where claws are kept.
