PJ Carmichael

A fog engulfs the city
as it musters up a short-term fix
for a lifelong problem;

times like these I miss the views
from parking garage rooftops,
the distance between the ground
and myself
shrinking.

The exchange is illusion:
joys of the spirit
for pleasures of the flesh,

the difference becoming
indistinguishable.

Empire of brick and concrete,
the conquest of sheep
armed to the teeth

waging war with the best
of intentions.

A misty stranglehold
obscuring harsh reality.
